We review where data originates, how applications read and write it, and which users need access. Large sequential datasets, small shared files and database workloads create different demands. The design records required throughput, growth, retention and recovery needs, along with the practical limits of existing clients and network connections.

The scope can cover switches, interfaces, optics, cabling and segmentation for management, storage and application traffic. Link speeds are selected as part of a complete path, including endpoint capabilities. The handover includes port maps, addressing and configuration records, helping administrators trace a problem without reconstructing the installation from physical cables.

File, block and object access are evaluated against the application rather than treated as interchangeable. Storage pools, volumes or shares are configured with documented capacity and protection choices. We explain the difference between raw and usable capacity and agree where temporary working data, shared project files and retained records will live.

Permissions are tested with the roles that will actually use the system. Monitoring, backup integration and restore procedures are included according to scope. Acceptance should cover both a representative data transfer and a recovery exercise; a successful file copy alone does not demonstrate that permissions, failure handling or retention are correct.

Costs depend on endpoints, cable routes, interface speeds, storage capacity, resilience requirements and migration effort. Hardware, installation, data movement and ongoing support are itemised.
